"Only Requite Me a Reason" features Nate Ruess from the American band Fun. Originally, it was just a song writing session just Pink realized that she needed someone else to sing the vocal with her considering she thought that information technology was more than of a conversation than a i perspective song. She asked Ruess to sing the song with her as a duet.[five]

Pink said "I was similar, 'no, this is a story, this is a conversation this song' - it needs the other perspective whether it's a guy and a girl, or two girls or two guys. 'I came in and tried to convince him that this was how the conversation was going to go and it was interesting you know, he was like 'I'll only do the demo cos I don't know virtually duets' and I totally tricked him into doing information technology, and I am so glad I was able to. 'I think now he's very happy that he did it, I think information technology'south a beautiful song and I'k really, really proud of it.[half dozen]

Nate Ruess told MTV News: "Writing the song was a whole different learning experience and was really fueled by the fact that Alecia [Pink's real proper noun is Alecia Moore] is and then stiff and contained and so very much herself. At the end of the day it'due south so hard to argue against her because what she does is always so neat.[half-dozen]

The vocal is about the want to hold on to a relationship fifty-fifty when it appears to be breaking down.[ane]

Composition [edit]

"Simply Give Me a Reason" is a pop ballad[7] written by both artists and produced past Jeff Bhasker, who was also the lead producer for Some Nights, the second album from Ruess' band, fun. "Just Requite Me a Reason" starts off with a simple melody played on the pianoforte, every bit Pinkish starts to sing the showtime stanza and chorus, the latter of which introduces drum machines and bass. The second stanza is then sung by Ruess, and the residual of the song is sung equally a duet. The song ends with a piano solo, like to the intro. Information technology has a duration of four minutes and two seconds.[8]

According to the sail music published on Musicnotes.com, "Just Give Me a Reason" is written in the primal of M major with a moderate tempo of 95 beats per minute. Pink and Ruess' vocals span two octaves in the vocal, from G3 to One thousand5. The verses of the song follow the chord progression G I C Em I C I One thousand, the chorus is G I D7/F# I Em I Bm D7, while the prechorus, the intro, and the outro follow the progression of Em A/C# I D I repeated iii times earlier C G/B I Am, and with a variation into the 2d chorus.[9]

The song lays out the emotions backside a wish for reconciliation in a relationship but doesn't provide easy answers. The simple piano based production ensures that every word is clear and the emotional tone of the voices is heard."[12]

Lewis Corner from Digital Spy said: "Every bit her latest single 'Just Give Me a Reason' demonstrates, Pink isn't afraid to ring with popular'south electric current flavour - and in this case information technology's Fun.'southward Nate Ruess. "I let you see the parts of me/ That weren't all that pretty/ And with every touch on y'all fixed them," Pinkish reveals over a folksy piano line, before she bursts into a heart-warbling chorus. The final result may echo fun.'s own anthemic hits, but Pink never fails to make a song her own, fifty-fifty when sharing the spotlight."[7] MusicOMH said that "Pink'southward other side – the impassioned songwriter – is showcased on Attempt, which demonstrates that she has a vocalization that non enough people requite her credit for. Similar territory is trodden in Just Requite Me a Reason, a duet with fun.'s pb vocaliser Nate Ruess (which sounds more like a fun. vocal than a Pink song, funnily enough), just information technology'due south these moments that show Pink at her most formulaic."[13]
